Kimi Antonelli and the Mercedes AMG Formula One Team extended their points lead by 43 points with a win in a dramatic Canadian Grand Prix. It is the 19-year old’s fourth both this season, and in his young career.
“It was really fun to battle to be fair with George,” Antonelli said. “Another win and I’m happy, and a massive thanks of course to the team.”
The race would begin with domination from the Mercedes duo of Antonelli and George Russell, with some close moments as the two would swap the lead on numerous occasions, but the duel would come to an end when Russell suffered a techincal issue that forced him to stop on track on lap 30.
Despite the early safety car, Antonelli remained out front for the remainder of the race, eventually winning by 10.7 seconds over seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for Scuderia Ferrari who came home in second, and Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing rounding out the podium.
Defending world champion for McLaren Lando Norris would have a rough showcase, suffering a mechanical failure himself at the midway point that resulted in an 18th place showing, now 73 points back of first in the standings.
Russell remains second in the standings with 88 points, with the Ferrari group of Hamilton and Charles Leclerc standing third and foruth respectively.
Formula One’s next stop will come at the Monaco Grand Prix from Circuit de Monaco on Sunday, June 7 at 9:00 a.m.
