Carson Kvapil Wins Martinsville, Jesse Love’s Points Lead Evaporates

Carson Kvapil won the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday, his third victory of the 2026 season. A timely triumph for the No. 1 JR Motorsports team vaulted them back into the title hunt with one race left to crown a champion.

“Just kinda had a rough race in between the beginning of Stage 1 to the end there,” Kvapil said. “Kept getting shuffled back and couldn’t really do nothing right. We made the call to come in early which in turn means you stay out on older tires later. Just really worked out. Rodney [Childers] and everyone on that team made the right call.”

Despite Kvapil’s win, perhaps the greatest impact on the Chase standings was a huge shift in the points lead. Entering Martinsville, defending champ Jesse Love led by 19 points over Justin Allgaier. Now it’s Allgaier who leads with a 22-point cushion over Love. Corey Day is third at 23 points back, with Kvapil fourth and 31 points behind. Sheldon Creed has the steepest hill to climb among eligible drivers, with a 42-point deficit after Martinsville.

Points Shifts

Justin Allgaier’s points lead could’ve been even larger if he succeeded in tracking down Kvapil over the race’s closing laps. Allgaier did reel Kvapil in, but he was still four tenths of a second behind his JR Motorsports teammate at the checkered flag. Kvapil’s victory not only kept him in the hunt, but ensured Allgaier stays vulnerable for Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Dealing with suspension and cooling issues throughout the race, Jesse Love’s No. 2 Richard Childress Racing team was surely hoping for simple damage control within their points situation. That goal seemed attainable until Love lost his brakes and slammed the outside wall on Lap 219. The former points leader finished 30th, nine laps off the pace.

“There wasn’t a magic thing I was gonna do to pull us out of the hole once it kinda started except to be smart and make high-percentage moves,” Love said. “I feel like we kinda did, but the first problem we had with breaking the suspension and having the water pump line get cut, all these different things that happened…I just knew that I was going to maximize the most I could out of the day and then obviously losing brakes kinda does you in.”

Corey Day entered the race 29 points behind Love for the championship lead. The possibility existed for him to erase most if not all of that gap if he capitalized on the misfortunes of his competitors. He did so relative to Love, whom Day is now only a single point behind. As for the Chase lead itself, Day gained six points on Allgaier with his third-place finish.

Incidents Throughout the Field

The close quarters of Martinsville led to several multi-car incidents during Saturday’s race. The first came on Lap 29, when Patrick Emerling had a brake failure that collected Patrick Staropoli. On the ensuing restart Sammy Smith made contact with Lavar Scott, causing a pileup that also involved Brent Crews and Ryan Ellis.

A spin by Jeremy Clements triggered the caution that ended Stage 1, awarding ten points to Allgaier. Jesse Love finished fifth, limiting Allgaier’s points gains to four. Another incident occurred on Lap 95 when the Jordan Anderson Racing cars of Jeb Burton and Daniel Dye made contact, causing a spin that also took out Harrison Burton.

Anthony Alfredo won Stage 2, picking up his third stage win of the 2026 season. Allgaier earned nine more points while Love missed the top-10 entirely. From stages alone, Allgaier gained 13 points over Love in the standings.

Multiple other drivers spun throughout Stage 3, including second incidents for Patrick Emerling and Daniel Dye. On Lap 162 Mason Maggio pinched Garrett Smithley into the outside wall, sending Maggio’s car down the track toward the inside wall. Emerling became involved in a wreck for the third time of the race when he piled into Maggio. After the race, Maggio and Smithley were seen talking through the incident with the latter expressing his frustration.
