Ty Gibbs won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday, finally becoming a winner in his 131st career start. He was barely able to fend off Ryan Blaney in an overtime restart.
“I would love for my father to see this, but he knew it was gonna happen and expected it as well,” Gibbs reflected after taking the checkered flag. “Hopefully we put on a great show for the fans. I really appreciate it. Thank you for Team 54 and everybody that’s a part of this whole deal, what a great day!”
Two Late Restarts
Gibbs was initially trying in vain to reel Blaney in for the lead until Chase Elliott spun with 23 laps to go, bringing out the caution. Blaney pitted from the lead for new tires, as did Kyle Larson from third. Ty Gibbs stayed out to inherit the lead, joined by Carson Hocevar, Chase Briscoe, Denny Hamlin, and Tyler Reddick.

Reddick surged on the penultimate restart, racing side by side with Gibbs as the laps ticked away. Gibbs moved to the lead as Larson and Blaney re-entered the picture, while Reddick slid back to fourth. With four new tires Blaney roared to second and set his sights on Gibbs’ No. 54 Toyota.
As Blaney began to track Gibbs down, he appeared to get loose with five laps to go, causing Larson to hit him from behind. Suddenly with three laps remaining, Riley Herbst’s No. 35 Toyota spun and hit the wall, triggering an overtime restart. He received contact from Kyle Busch in possible retaliation for a similar incident with the roles reversed earlier in the race.
On the ensuing restart, Gibbs opted for the outside while Blaney took the bottom. With a Cup Series champion on either side of him, Gibbs stayed cool under pressure and held his line. Blaney pushed hard out of Turn 4 on the final lap, but came up just short of his second win this season.
“I kinda was side-by-side with Ty and I just slipped getting in there,” Blaney said. “It was really easy to slip off the bottom and that kinda cost me some time. And then…yeah, I don’t know. I gave it my best shot on the last restart. Got a good restart and, you know, it was close. We just couldn’t get it done.”
A Long Time Coming
Prior to Sunday, Ty Gibbs had 21 top-five finishes in the NASCAR Cup Series. Twice he finished second: Darlington Racewayd in 2024 and at the Chicago street course in 2025. His previous best finish at Bristol came in last year’s spring race when he placed third.
After three full seasons of Cup Series racing, the clock was ticking as the industry awaited Gibbs’ first career win. He already set a new mark for the most starts at Joe Gibbs Racing without one. After five consecutive weeks finishing no worse than sixth, the 23-year-old finally broke through.
“I just want to thank so many people…to start with, God,” said team owner Joe Gibbs, Ty’s grandfather. “He’s blessed us and our family. They just really really…I can’t say enough.” Joe’s interview was briefly interrupted by his jubilant grandson coming to embrace him, sharing for a few moments the emotions of the younger Gibbs’ long-awaited first win.
Underdog Days

Alex Bowman made his first start since Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, back in the car following recurring symptoms of vertigo. Unfortunately, Bowman’s return was cut short after being collected in a wreck on Lap 160. The same incident ended any chances of winning for Shane van Gisbergen and John Hunter Nemechek, while Todd Gilliland avoided significant damage to finish sixth.
Gilliland’s sixth-place run was his first top-ten of the 2026 season, allowing him to move up two spots in the standings to 26th. He was the second highest-finishing driver not in the Chase behind fifth-place Chase Briscoe.
“My team did a great job, the execution was there all day,” Gilliland said. “We’ve gotta get qualifying figured out, it’s tough but that’ll make these days a little bit easier for us.”
Following the previous night’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series win, Connor Zilisch was hoping to build some Cup momentum with a much-needed strong run on Sunday. His hopes were derailed on Lap 383 when he spun and hit the wall, sustaining damage to his No. 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet. Zilisch wound up 33rd, 27 laps off the pace.
Points Outlook
After eight race, the 16 drivers poised to make the NASCAR Cup Series Chase are the same ones in those seats entering the race. The biggest gains were made by Kyle Larson and Bubba Wallace, each of whom moved up three spots in the standings. Shane van Gisbergen fell to the final spot in the Chase with a 34th-place finish. He currently sits just one spot above Chase Briscoe.
Tyler Reddick remains the points leader, 62 points ahead of Ryan Blaney. Denny Hamlin hung onto third place, 86 points behind Reddick. Gibbs vaulted to fourth in points with his breakthrough win, while Chase Elliott dropped to fifth.
