On July 6, 2026, one of the most shocking driver moves in IndyCar history was announced. After 25 seasons at Chip Ganassi Racing, Scott Dixon announced that he would be moving to Arrow McLaren for the 2027 season. And now, on September 29, his replacement is confirmed.
Christian Lundgaard will pilot the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing on a multi-year deal starting in 2027.
“It is an honor and a privilege to join Chip Ganassi Racing beginning next season,” Lundgaard told Motorsport.com. “The fact that it is in the iconic #9 PNC Bank Honda makes it even more special. CGR has set the standard in IndyCar for decades, and the opportunity to be part of that legacy is something I’ve worked toward my entire career.”
Lundgaard has driven full-time in the NTT IndyCar Series since 2022. In those five seasons, the Danish driver has three victories, sixteen podiums, four poles, and a best points finish of third coming this past season. Two of his three career victories, nearly half of his career podiums, as well as his previously mentioned career best points finish came this past season. Notably, one of those podiums took place on an oval at the Miluwakee Mile. It is widely speculated that one of the reasons McLaren parted ways with the Dane was his lack of oval success.
Multiple drivers, such as Alex Palou and Marcus Erricson, entered their stints at CGR unproven on ovals. Both went on the Indianapolis 500 for the organization.
“I’m incredibly excited about what’s ahead,” Lundgaard added. “I can’t wait to get to work with everyone at Chip Ganassi Racing and compete for wins, championships, and the Indianapolis 500.”
Team owner Chip Ganassi has won the past four IndyCar championships and six of the seven since 2020. Ganassi shared in Lundgaard’s excitement.
“We are excited to welcome Christian to Chip Ganassi Racing. We know he’s capable of accomplishing even more in the NTT IndyCar Series, and we’re looking forward to helping him reach that next level with the #9 team,” said team owner Chip Ganassi.
“He’s already proven he can win races, and it isn’t often a driver of his caliber becomes available. Throughout our history, one of the things we’ve done best is identify young talent, help them maximize their potential, and develop them into championship contenders. We believe Christian has all the talent to be the next driver to do that.”
