Christian Lundgaard and Arrow McLaren captured the victory in a wild ‘XPEL Grand Prix’ at Road America in the NTT IndyCar Series. This marks not only his second win this season, but third overall of his career.
“I knew we had a chance,” Lundgaard said. “We’ve just been on the struggle bus all weekend, so to turn this around I have to thank the team for that.”
Lundgaard’s late-race surge would come at the fall of the No. 66 of Marcus Armstrong for Meyer Shank Racing when his motor would expire heading up the frontstretch, ruining what could’ve been an exciting day for the driver out of New Zealand.
Finishing second, once again, was David Malukas for Team Penske. The Chicago, Illinois native fell one spot short in the last lap shootout against Lundgaard marking the fifth second-place result of his career. Malukas still capitalized on a solid points day as he now moves to third into the standings.
“We’re P2 champions,” Malukas said. “I just need to look into my race pace, I need to go back and study and see what I could do differently.”
Defending series champion Alex Palou would sit on the pole for the second consecutive season and would lead the opening laps of the event. Palou’s day would be a whirlwind, as pit stops at Lap 29 would see the Spaniard make a rare mistake by speeding on pit road and taking a huge blow in the championship battle. The following lap saw a full-course caution come out that would cycle Palou back on the lead lap. This lucky break would allow the driver of the No. 10 DHL Honda to rally to fifth.
