Ty Gibbs Holds Off Teammate Bell for Iowa Win

Ty Gibbs won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway on Sunday, his second victory of the 2026 season. The No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was out front for 20 total laps, holding off teammate Christopher Bell when it counted in the final green flag run of the race.

A battle for the lead ensued in the final stage after Ty Gibbs took two tires and Christopher Bell took four. As the pit stops cycled through, Bell settled in behind Gibbs in lapped traffic as he worked to run his teammate down.

“This is what you call a bad second place for sure,” Bell said. “I don’t know what else to say. Ty did a really good job, they did a great job managing the race.”

Ross Chastain put a top-five run on the line by staying out long later than Gibbs and Bell. Entering the race five spots outside the Chase, Chastain gambled that his risky pit strategy could maximize the day with a much-needed win. He wound up finishing seventh to chip away marginally at his Chase deficit.

Battle for the Win

Bell’s four-tire advantage seemed to fade throughout the run, and a wobble with under 40 laps remaining pushed Bell from just one car length back to almost a full second. By the time Bell and Gibbs got to second and third, Chastain’s lead was over 13 seconds but quickly diminishing.

On Lap 331 Chastain finally relinquished the lead and headed to pit road. By now Bell was back to around a half second behind Gibbs, looking to win his first race of the year after six second-place finishes.

With seven to go, Bell reach Gibbs on the outside but couldn’t quite mount the run to take his teammate’s lead away. As lapped traffic forced Gibbs off the bottom it appeared to be to Bell’s benefit. Still, multiple times as Bell got close to Gibbs he seemed to get loose and slip backward. As the two reached the lapped car of Brad Keselowski, Bell didn’t have room on the track to pounce and take the win.

Timely Turnarounds

The race’s two stage victories went to Ryan Blaney and Christopher Bell respectively. Bell capitalized on a pit strategy employed by Joe Gibbs Racing to keep their drivers off pit road in favor of track position. With JGR initially running 1-2-3, Bell hung onto the lead to pick up his fourth stage victory of the season.

Connor Zilisch qualified eighth, his first time starting inside the top-10 on an oval in the Cup Series. The 20-year-old rookie ran a clean race and held onto track position, finishing a solid 11th. It was a much-needed turnaround for Zilisch, who has struggled to find both raw speed and good luck throughout 2026.

Josh Berry leapt three spots in the standings by finishing fourth, his first top-five run of the 2026 season. Though it’s too late for Berry to make a run at the Chase, back-to-back top-10 finishes has given the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing team their first flash of real momentum this year.

Prior to the green flag, three cars were sent to the rear of the field: Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, and Brad Keselowski. Hamlin’s team was forced to service the No. 11 Toyota’s brakes, while Elliott and Keselowski crashed during practice and qualifying respectively.

The first caution of the race came on Lap 3. Tyler Reddick’s No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota lost its grip beneath Erik Jones’s No. 43 Legacy Motor Club Toyota, sending both cars into the outside wall. Neither driver was able to resume their race.

Multiple cautions flew for solo spins, including Shane van Gisbergen and Carson Hocevar. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. also went for a spin after a nudge from Austin Hill pushed Michael McDowell up into the No. 47’s bumper.

On Lap 149 John Hunter Nemechek appeared to get loose underneath Kyle Larson, sending the latter driver’s No. 5 Chevrolet up the groove above a three-wide battle. With Larson making it four-wide, an upward slide from Riley Herbst on the bottom triggered an accordion effect that pushed Larson and Alex Bowman into the wall.

Points Outlook

Once viewed as the runaway regular season king, Tyler Reddick dropped from 2nd to 4th in the points standings. Race winner Ty Gibbs jumped to 2nd, with Ryan Blaney holding strong in 3rd. The Joe Gibbs Racing duo of Chase Briscoe and Christopher Bell rose from 7th and 10th to 5th and 6th with a pair of top-six runs.

Though Bell gained the most points positions, Ross Chastain had perhaps the most consequential gains in the field on Sunday. Finishing seventh and earning 13 stage points, Chastain rose from 21st to 18th in the standings. Entering Iowa 82 points outide the Chase, he now has only 47 points to make up in the next three races.

Austin Cindric remains on the Chase bubble, with a 29-point advantage to 17th-place Ryan Preece. As he looks to add a second RFK Racing Chase entry, Preece has finished higher than Cindric for each of the last three weeks. If momentum holds, both he and Chastain may provide Cindric a reason to sweat for the remainder of the regular season.
