RFK Racing will run three full-time teams in the NASCAR Cup Series next year, according to team president Chip Bowers. This commitment comes amid speculation that the team may only have two charters in 2027, with their third reverting back to the possession of Rick Ware Racing. RWR is transferring that charter to Legacy Motor Club in 2027.
“We’re not going to go backward as an organization,” Bowers said in an interview with The Athletic’s Jeff Gluck on his podcast. “We will run three cars, that’s unequivocally our focus moving forward.”
From 2017 to 2024, RFK Racing operated as a two-car team with two permanent charters. Last year they expanded to three cars, leasing another charter from RWR to enter the No. 60 Ford Mustang for Ryan Preece. Legacy Motor Club is acquiring that charter in 2027 as they themselves expand to three full-time teams.
Bowers said that while the team would prefer to have three charters secured before the 2027 season, they’re willing to field the No. 60 car as an open entry if necessary. “Short of being able to access one or acquire one we’ll run open,” he told Gluck. “That’s a decision we’ve already made as an organization.”
A commitment from RFK Racing to field three cars in 2027 may quell uncertainty about Ryan Preece’s future with the organization. Fellow RFK driver Chris Buescher is rumored to be a free agent in the coming off-season, but no announcement has been made about his contract status. Owner/driver Brad Keselowski has said he plans to remain in full-time competition for the foreseeable future.
