Defending Formula One world champion Lando Norris returned to the top of the podium in this year’s running of the Hungarian Grand Prix. This marks the 12th career win for the McLaren driver in his 163rd career start.
“I’m tired. I don’t know what happened,” Norris said after the race. “My pace today was probably some of the best pace I’ve ever had. The car was beautiful to drive and I had confidence.”
The event began with Piastri taking charge at the green light, with Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen under fire from Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari. The Australian driver spent the first half of the event out in clean air with Norris following close behind. However, the team battle would flip on its head when Piastri, fresh from his second pit stop, made contact with Williams driver Carlos Sainz in the first sector, giving Norris the advantage.
Piastri’s day would come to an end due to a gearbox issue late in the going, joining the Cadillac duo of Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas as the three DNF’s of the day.
Points leader and driver for Mercedes AMG, Kimi Antonelli, would come home third for his ninth podium finish of the year, sitting with 219 points and 50 ahead of Hamilton in second. Norris stands in fifth, 10 points behind of Leclerc sitting above.
Verstappen earns back-to-back podiums with a second place run, marking his fourth of the campaign. Ferrari would round out the top-5 running order with Charles Leclerc arriving in the fourth spot, and Hamilton maintaining fifth after a five-second penalty on pit lane.
